PGR Conference 15th June 2013
The School of Education hosted it's fourth annual Postgraduate Research Conference, entitled 'Future of Education' on Saturday 15th June 2013. The aim of the conference was to showcase the current research being undertaken by the School’s postgraduate students. The day was organised by a postgraduate research committee, chaired by Ludovic Highman and including Ph.D. students Jolanta Burke, Katie Guinnane, Connor O’Donoghue, Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin as well as Dr. Stephen Minton. The conference comprised of four sessions each chaired by members of the academic staff Dr. Andrew Loxley, Dr. Aidan Seery, Dr. Carmel O’Sullivan and Dr. John Walsh.
Professor Michael Grenfell opened the conference by giving an engaging talk on the future of educational research within the broader context of the higher education Landscape documents aimed at system reconfiguration, inter-institutional collaboration and system governance in Irish higher education.
The first session was entitled “Student Experiences” and featured contributions from Mark Kearns, Aoife M. O’Brien and Connor O’Donoghue. The second session focused on the theme of “Schooling of the Future”, during which Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin, Maria-Effrosyni Doukoglou, Gene Dalton and Liam Walsh spoke. Sr. Alice Drajea Jurugo, Dee McGarry, Patti Roche and Denise Burns spoke on the topic “Language and Literacy”, and the final session of the day, “Education for All”, included presentations from Helen Heneghan, Colin McElroy, Kate Carr-Fanning and Declan Reilly.
A poster session was organised after lunch during which postgraduate research students Agnella Craig, Fiona Dowling, Justine Elizabeth Durrant, Emma Farrell, Katie Guinnane and Ludovic Highman were given the opportunity to present their work and answer questions regarding their research.
The conference was closed by Dr. Stephen Minton, the Postgraduate Research Co-ordinator, who summarised the day’s proceedings and commented on the themes that emerged throughout the day.

The School of Education hosted the third annual Postgraduate Research Conference, entitled “Now That’s What I Call Educational Research: 3” on Saturday, the 9th of June. The aim of the conference was to showcase the current research being undertaken by the School’s postgraduate students. The day was organised by a postgraduate research committee, chaired by Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin, and the sessions were chaired by final-year PhD candidates.
Dr. Aidan Seery, Director of Research, opened the conference, highlighting the importance of peer engagement and criticality.
The first session was entitled “Voice and Identity” and featured contributions from Patricia McCarthy, Kate Carr-Fanning and Connor O’Donoghue. The second session focused on the theme of “Curriculum and Classroom”, during which Denise Burns, Maria Garvey and Brendan MacMahon spoke. Paul Condell, Mary Kenny and Ciara Roche spoke on the topic “Further Education”, and the final session of the day, “Policy & Civic Responsibility”, included presentations from Ludovic Highman, Colman Ross and John O’Malley.
The guest speaker, Dr. Ekaterina Kozina, gave an address on “Life after the PhD”, and the conference was closed by Dr. Stephen Minton, the Postgraduate Research Co-ordinator, who summarised the day’s proceedings and commented on the themes that emerged throughout the day.
