50th anniversary of Visiting Teacher Service
Dr. Damian Murchan addressed teachers and guests celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Visiting Teacher Service. The event in DIT Grangegorman, attended by Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe, recognised teachers working on behalf of children who are Blind/Visually Impaired or Deaf/Hard of Hearing. Dr. Murchan praised the foresight of the architects of the service 50 years ago and noted that the educational and life opportunities for children with sensory disabilities and their families have improved immeasurably as a result of visiting teachers throughout the country. Wishing the service continued success for the next 50 years, he stressed the need to retain and recruit teachers possessing the professional competence, experience and specialised skills required to address the needs of children with visual and hearing difficulties.
