• Mohammad Alnufaie, a third year PhD student, has co-written a paper with his supervisor, Professor Michael Grenfell, with the title "EFL students' writing strategies in Saudi Arabian ESP writing classes: Perspectives on learning strategies in self-access language learning", which has been published in the latest issue of the Studies in Self-Access Learning Journal.

• Dr Colette Murphy has been invited to give a talk at the EU Presidency Conference entitled Teacher Educator Development. The EU Presidency Conference is organised by the Teaching Council and the Department of Education. It is called: Integration, Innovation and Improvement – the Professional Identity of Teacher Educators. It will be held on Monday and Tuesday 18th & 19th February in Dublin Castle.
• Professor Michael Grenfell has been invited to give a Keynote address on ‘Researching the Social Space of Music’ at the CRESC (Centre for Research on Socio-cultural Change’, conference in Manchester next February, 13-14th 2013. This conference is part of their programme of events researching the social Space of Music: Networks, Worlds, Fields and Scenes.

• The CAVE (Cultures, Academic Values and Education) hosted a special research seminar on Thursday January 24th at 1pm in room 3105 Arts Building. Dr. Kevin Kelly of the School of Engineering, TCD will present a paper entitled: ‘Seeing The Future: What CAO entrant information can tell us about students’ ability to progress in college.’ In his paper results will be presented based on 10 years of student entrant data in Trinity College analysing the relationship between second level performance (as assessed through the leaving certificate) and third level progression (from first to second year). • Dr Carmel O’Sullivan, director of the Arts in Education Research Group hosted the first in a series of Arts Biography research seminars at the Printing House, Trinity College Dublin on Thursday 29th November. Music education lecturer Marita Kerin explored the concepts of informal learning and the biography of place (habitus and field) with singer songwriter Ralph McTell in advance of a more focused exploration the following morning of the notion of artistic biography and how it impacts on artistic output which was convened by the Chair and Head of the School of Education, Professor Michael Grenfell.

• Two Bachelor in Music Education students, Aisling Deevy and Brian Dungan have been accepted onto the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra Mentoring Scheme 2012. This involves rehearsing with the NSO  and  taking part in the concert on November 30th at 8pm in the National Concert Hall. The concert, entitled 'Dreams, Defiance and Leave-Taking' will be conducted by Rafael Payare, a young, up-and-coming Venzuelan conductor who has worked with Gustavo Dudamel and Claudio Abbado. Aisling and Brian will be playing in Richard Strauss' Don Juan and Shostakovich's Symphony No. 10 in E Minor. • Dr. Damien Murchan attended the annual conference of the Association for  Educational Assessment - Europe (AEA-Europe) in Berlin from 6th to 10th of November.
• Dr Colette Murphy has been invited to give a presentation Vygotsky's Zone of Proximal Development: a Russian perspective on Monday 19th November in Uppsala University in Sweden to the Department of Education. Dr Murphy will also lead a seminar on 20th November at the Centre for Gender Research (also in Uppsala University) on using children's-rights-based research methodologies in preschool teacher education.

• The book launch of 'A Neutron Walks into a Bar' was held in the Science Gallery in TCD on October 23rd. The book is a compilation of science tweets sent from all around the world based on themes that Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin and her colleagues compiled. The book is filled with quirky science facts and jokes that should make an interesting coffee-table book and all monies/profits/proceeds from the book go to Cystic Fibrosis Association of Ireland, specifically funding scientific research.

• Research Lunch Time Seminar took place on 27th September, presented by Dr Stephen James Minton. Title: Social Cognition, Genocide and the Sioux-Cheyenne Campaign (1863 - 1890) [PDF]   
• A National Music Education Conference which addressed issues influencing the inclusion and participation of Ireland’s children and young people in music took place on Wednesday, September 26th, at Trinity College Dublin. Organised by a coalition of partners – Music Generation, St. Patrick’s College Drumcondra, Mary Immaculate College Limerick, Trinity College Dublin and Irish Music Education – the aim of the conference was to understand how we can increase inclusion in music education in our society so that all children and young people benefit from quality music education. The conference brought together a range of expertise from a variety of backgrounds including practitioners, researchers, performers, education managers and policy makers working in all types of music such as community opera, online traditional music, jazz or classical.
• ECER is the largest conference on educational research in Europe and was held this year in Cadiz, Spain. Four members of the School of Education presented papers at conference: Dr. Damien Murchan, Mr. Keith Johnston, Dr. Aidan Seery and Dr. Michael Shevlin. Keith Johnston and Damien Murchan’s  paper was entitled ‘Enacting Key Skills-based Curricula in Secondary Education: Lessons from a Technology-mediated, Group-based Learning Initiative’ and discusses aspects of the Bridge21 initiative. Michael Shevlin presented a paper with Richard Rose -entitled 'Individual Education Plans in Irish Primary Schools: A National Perspective' and co-presented a round table on a European project: 'Biographical Experiences of People with Disability in European Educational Systems' with colleagues Gottfried Biewer, Tobias Buchner (University of Vienna) and Fiona Smyth (TCD). Aidan Seery’s paper [co-authored with Andrew Loxley] carries the title ‘Of Measures & Metrics – A Žižekian influenced exploration of the impact of accountability regimes on academic subjectivity in Irish higher education’ and was delivered in the Higher Education division of the conference. The conference took place from September 18th to 21st.

• Dr. Carmel O'Sullivan gave the opening address to College and University Career Advisors who held a CPD day in Trinity College on Sept. 12th, which was organised by the Association of Higher Education Career Services. Dr. O'Sullivan and Elizabeth Fleeton also presented delegates with an overview of the PDE programme in Trinity College, and Ph.D student Ms. Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin presented a graduate view of the P.D.Ed in Trinity College.
• Professor Michael James Grenfell has been invited to give a Keynote Lecture on 'Teacher Education' at the Annual Conference of the Society for Educational Studies in London on the 15th November 2012.
• Dr. Carmel O’Sullivan has assumed the post of Registrar in the School of Education for the coming year, replacing Dr. Ann Devitt who is on maternity leave this term. This post entails responsibility for the Professional Diploma in Education (PDE) programme which will be under review this coming year in preparation for the anticipated re-structuring in 2014-15.
• Dr. O'Sullivan will be presenting an intensive educational course on creativity and active learning in the classroom for early years teachers in Beijing from Sept. 17th to 25th. Dr. O'Sullivan has been invited to work with colleagues from relevant drama in education organisations in China, such as Drama Rainbow in Beijing and the Shanghai Theatre Academy, and also with Ministry of Education officials.

• The Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Jimmy Deenihan, T.D., officially launched the newly established Arts Education Research Group, which is based in Trinity College’s School of Education. The launch took place in the Neil Hoey Theatre in the Long Room Hub, and was attended by representatives from many arts and education organisations in Ireland, including the Arts Council, IMMA, the National Gallery of Ireland, the DES, the Teacher Unions, the NCCA, Poetry Ireland, the Royal Irish Academy, the Conservatoire of Music in DIT, and a number of prominent artists, teachers, scholars and academics from both within Trinity and beyond who have an interest in the area of arts and education.>>>Read More
• Ludovic Highman, Ph.D. student wrote an article 'Brave New University: Fuelling the Knowledge Economy Society' which was accepted and published in the annual Trinity College Dublin Journal of Postgraduate Research, Vol.X1, who select the ten best articles college wide. The launch of the Journal took place with a panel of four, headed by Senator David Norris to judge the presentation of each contributor.
• The School of Education hosted the third annual Postgraduate Research Conference, entitled “Now That’s What I Call Educational Research: 3” on Saturday, the 9th of June. • Drs. Andrew Loxley, Aidan Seery and John Walsh have been commissioned to edit a new book from Palgrave-Macmillan entitled: ‘Higher Education in Ireland: Practices, Policies and Possibilities’.The volume will contain contributions from a number of academics both within the School of Education and more broadly in Irish higher education. It will also feature a contribution from Professor Sir Peter Scott of the Institute of Education, University of London. The volume is due for publication in 2013.
• Aoibhinn Ni Shuilleabhain, Ph.D. student, attended the EERA Spring School on 'Strengthening the value of curriculum research for curriculum policies and practices' at the University of Porto, Portugal, where she gave a paper on curriculum reform in mathematics in Ireland. Aoibhinn was the only Irish delegate chosen in competitive selection.

• The IES Research Conference 'Examining theory and practice in inclusive education' recently hosted a one-day conference in Trinity College. For further details >>>read more[PDF]. The conference also saw the launch of a major new research group specialising in Psychology of Education. The group brings together researchers, students and practioners from a broad range of strands within the discipline. Its members express their overarching aim as 'translating psychological theories and research into policy and practice'. In particular, its specialisms include Special Education Needs, Aggression Studies, Educational Guidance and Counseling, Prejudice and Self - Esteem. These areas will form a focus for research projects, publications and events over the coming years. The core team is made up of Dr. Conor Mc Guckin and Dr. Stephen James Minton and presently operates from within our Inclusion in Education and Society Research Grouping led by Dr. Michael Shevlin.

• Congratulations to John-Paul Sheridan, another successful Ph.D. candidate from the School of Education, who passed his viva examination. His thesis was based on the 'religious identity of beginning Primary School teachers'. His supervisor was Dr. Aidan Seery and he was examined by Dr. Carmel O'Sullivan and Prof. Bob Davis of the University of Glasgow.
• Drs. Andrew Loxley and Aidan Seery presented a paper entitled: “’We are the rump who do not do the cool things’: A Foucaultian/Žižekian influenced exploration of the impact of accountability regimes on academic subjectivity in Irish higher education” at the British Sociological Association conference at the University of Leeds last Thursday, April 12th. Papers were also read at the Educational Studies Association Conference in Cork before Easter by Drs. Ann Devitt, Damien Murchan, Ms. Marita Kerin and Keith Johnston of the School.

• Dr. Ann Devitt and Professor Michael Grenfell will be attending a Conference of the American Educational Research Association in Vancouver in April. Prof. Grenfell will be presenting a paper in a Symposium on Classroom Language Ethnography and New Literacy Studies and Dr. Ann Devitt's paper is entitled 'A New Apprenticeship in Language Teacher Education'.
• Dr. Devitt will also be on a study visit to Prof. David Pearson's project Seeds of Science / Roots of Reading programme at the Graduate School of Education, University of California Berkeley, USA.
• Dr. Stephen James Minton's publication of 'Using Psychology in the Classroom' had just been published.
• Dr. Conor Mc Guckin warmly welcomes Guidance Counsellors from Finland to Ireland and the School of Education. Pekka Visuri, Kim Karlsson, Vesa Kostamo, Pasi Frilander, Jaana Myyrylainen, and Sirpa Komsi will visit the School of Education on Tuesday 13th March to find out about research informed work that takes place in relation to the Schools highly regarded Masters programme in Education Guidance and Counselling. This study visit is led by Hilary Lynch (Euroguidance National Co-ordinator with the National Centre for Guidance in Education [www.ncge.ie]) and Mary Quirke (Assistant Director of the Association for Higher Education Access & Disability: AHEAD: www.ahead.ie). In particular, the delegation will discuss issues relating to disability, psychometric assessment, and guidance within education.

Michael, who is the CEO of Belong To Youth Services, will be speaking on the subject of LBGT activism, which is the focus of his doctoral studies. The title for the forum is 'Changing Ireland; Shaping our Future', and there are three other panelists.
• Legendary singer-songwriter Ralph Mc Tell popped into the School of Education on the 6th of January to discuss one of our forthcoming seminars on artistic biography in which he is appearing. The event is planned for later this year and will include an interview about Ralph's personal background. He will also perform some of his most biographical songs.
• Dr. Andrew Loxley has been awarded a grant from the Arts and Social Sciences Benefaction Fund to support his study entitled the Retention, Progression and Persistance in University Settings: A Study of Postgraduate Research Student Experiences.
• Dr. Stephen James Minton was awarded a grant from Trinity College's Arts and Social Sciences Benefaction Fund to assist with his research into the incidence and typology of, and attitudes towards bullying behaviour in primary schools in Skopje, Macedonia. This research will be the first of its kind to be conducted in Macedonia since 2001, and the most extensive yet conducted in the region of the former Yugoslavia.

• Dr. Andrew Loxley and Dr. John Walsh gave a briefing on 'The implementation of the National Strategy on Higher Education: An Irish solution to an Irish problem?' to a meeting of the advisory council of the Teachers' Union of Ireland, on Wednesday 7th December in the Gresham Hotel. The presentation considered a number of key issues for the future development of higher education, including the Hunt report's proposals for clusters, mergers and inter-institutional alliances, as well as the strategic dialogue recently launched by the HEA.

• Professor Parveen Kumar was conferred with a Doctor in Education (D.Ed).  She studied medicine in the UK and spent most of her working life in the British NHS in the North and East End of London.
