SER events: Scholarship Workshop

2006-01-18

Sitting the schol exams can be a stressful and daunting experience - I certainly found it to be so! Once the initial decision is made to sit the exams it’s hard to know where to start. After attending last years workshop I was focused and had a much clearer idea of what I needed to do in order to be successful. At the beginning of second year students often have conflicting notions as to what results are required in schols to achieve exemptions or indeed a scholarship. The workshop clarifies all of the required grades and gives students general information such as when and how to apply to sit the exams. Subject specific advice is also given by students who were successful in the exams the previous year.

This year we decided to make a power point presentation with all the information, general and subject specific. This helped the workshop to flow smoothly between speakers but more importantly we were also able to put all the information on the SER web page; students could then access it whenever they wished. All the subjects on the BESS senior freshman curriculum were covered and my thanks to the committee members who imparted their words of wisdom; Colm, Deirdre, Enda and Sasha. Also thanks to Claire Kinsella who kindly agreed to fill in the gaps in the committee’s knowledge. I hope that the second years who attended the workshop came away with a clearer picture of the challenges posed by the schol exams and that we helped their efforts to overcome them in some small way.
