Introduction

The developing world faces many challenges. As inequality between the developed and developing world continues to grow, the developing world becomes increasingly disadvantaged by the effects of poverty. Some of the challenges that these countries face are introduced in the articles in this section.

Developing countries encounter challenges such as poverty and hunger, education, gender equality, child mortality, maternal health, HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases, the environment and sustainable development, and forming partnerships for development. These headings roughly outline the topics of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). These issues are discussed in the UN Millennium Development Goals section.

The interrelated and complex nature of development means that no single aspect stands in isolation and therefore no number of goals and targets could examine all issues relating to development. Further topics related to development can be found in the Other Topics section.
