The aim of the project is to assess the 'dynamics of national employment models'. DYNAMO will assess the ways in which they are challenged by internal and external factors (demographic changes, globalisation) and how they react and adapt to these challenges. These factors are determined by the tension between the European economies trying to remain competitive on an increasingly globalised market and the desire to achieve a European model of social cohesion and increased labour market participation. The key research questions in this respect are whether EU policy frameworks like the Lisbon Agenda and the Internal Market Strategy assist in achieving the aim of developing a competitive European Social Model. The project also seeks to analyse if the various socio-economic strands in Europe are converging towards a common social model.
The project is funded as a specific targeted research or innovation project under the EU Commission Sixth Framework Programme, Priority 7 'Citizens and Governance in a knowledge based society', Research Area 3: 'The variety of paths towards a knowledge society'.
The participating teams have presented the reports on the changes in the national employment models at the Annual Conference of the International Working Party on Labour Market Segmentation (IWPLMS). The project is now entering into the second phase of the individual economic sector analysis. The ERC team co-ordinates the analysis of the transport sector and will also study the IT and hotels sector. The next workshop will take place in Barcelona on May 5th and 6th 2005, where the sector co-ordinators will present summary reports of the main challenges in the individual sectors. In Barcelona the teams will also present the second part of the national reports, the description of typical individual lifecycle stages and a concluding synthesis of the general changes in the individual national employment systems.
