Graduates (2001)

Skills Demand, Provision and Acquisition: a study of Employers, Trinity Departments and Graduates.

The Research

The report 'Skills Demand, Provision and Acquisition' was carried out in collaboration with the Careers Advisory Service in Trinity College. The report looks at the skills needs of three types of employers that have traditionally attracted graduates from both vocational and non-vocational subject areas.

These employers are the Irish Civil Service, Banks and Consultants. The research specifically looks at the relation between employers' skills requirements, assessment and promotion procedures. The report also provides an analysis of the practices put in place within six Trinity College Departments to foster the employability of their students.

In particular, the research looks at curricular and extracurricular activities in the departments of Business Studies, Classics, Economics, Germanic Studies, Psychology and Sociology.

Finally, the report looks at the perceptions that 1992 and 1997 graduates from the above Departments have of the employability measures in place at Trinity College when they were students. This section also looks at the graduates' personal strategies of skills acquisition.

The research is based on in-depth interviews with employers, academics and graduates. Twenty-eight Dublin based graduates were tracked and interviewed personally. The results will be synthesised in a policy-oriented document that will hopefully contribute to discussion about employability in Trinity College Dublin.
