Enhanced/cognitive environments

Environments endowed with communicating sensors are evolutionary precisely because they can sense themselves and hence self-organize, thereby adapting to their surroundings. They are achieved through spatio-temporal sensing and monitoring of environmental variables, such as noise, vibration and pollution, as well as heat, fluid and traffic/motion flows. Contexts include (i) smart buildings, structures and cities, (ii) monitored, optimized and remediated buildings and infrastructure, (iii) habitat and species monitoring, (iv) advanced manufacturing systems, and (v) aviation. The spatio-temporal data harvests achieved via these technologies are at the heart of the big data agenda.
