Building the E3
In 2011, the School of Engineering and the School of Natural Sciences were mandated by the College to form a major new institute. The Strategy for the E3 (PDF) - the Engineering, Energy and Environment institute - was published in June 2012 and reviewed by leading international experts, who published their report in October 2012. They noted the “excellence and distinctiveness of the vision for the future”, and stated:
“The vision for the E3 Institute, in itself, positions the organization as a unique unit focused on large problems, both National and Global. We are unaware of any other academic organization that is positioned in a similar manner”.
The College Council approved the E3 Strategy (PDF) in November 2012, so that it is now a strategic priority for the College, forming part of its emerging Capital Projects Framework. A new landmark, sustainable E3 building is planned for the southeast corner of Trinity. Over the next 12 months, these plans will evolve and construction will commence in 2015. The building will have about 22,000 square metres of usable space and will cost in the region of €70 million. It will provide the educational and research infrastructure necessary for delivery of the E3 mission, along with the Schools’ priorities beyond the E3.
Implementation of the strategy is under way, involving fund-raising activities, and communication and outreach to stakeholders, including philanthropists, alumni and Government. In addition, a portfolio of E3 Scholarships is now being offered to prospective PhD students.
