Monumental

Warby

Date:

Weds 22 May at 9pm & Thurs 23 May at 8pm

Company:

Ros Warby (Australia)

Details:

Monumental draws from two iconic symbols of classical ballet - the swan and the soldier - to create a richly layered solo. Old 35mm films, projected images and atmospheric lighting combine with a humming cello score. Fleeting movements evoke the vulnerability and strength of human nature, the boldness of youth, and the wisdom of age. Charming and often hilarious, Monumental invites the audience to recognise the innocent bird and the brave, sometimes tainted soldier in all of us.

Arresting, enigmatic work - every move she makes is subtle and true Village Voice

Dublin Dance Festival at the Samuel Beckett Theatre

Untrained

Guerin

Date:

Sat 25 & Sun 26 May at 5pm

Company:

Lucy Guerin Inc. (Australia)

Details:

Lucy Guerin returns to Dublin Dance Festival with a quirky, irreverent theatrical experience.

Four men take to the stage in Untrained. Two are experienced dancers and two have no movement training at all. All are given the same instructions - from basic dance moves to acting out scenes from films. Unavoidable and sometimes humorous comparisons arise between them, but this warm and big-hearted show doesn't mock. Instead it examines how their physical histories set the men apart and reveals a portrait of each one's character.

Ms Guerin's concept seems a genuine crowd pleaser ... there were cheers and actual gasps ... as well as plenty of laughter The New York Times

Weds 7 to Sat 17 August at 8pm; Previews 3, 5 & 6 August at 8pm (no Sunday performances)

Playwright: Samuel Beckett
Director: Gavin Quinn
Company:

Pan Pan Theatre

Details:

Silence in the house, not a sound, only the fire, no flames now, embers. Embers.
Henry sits on a beach, remembering and imagining stories and incidents from his life. Tormented by his father's suicide, his own dysfunctional family history and his failure as a writer, hallucinations and reality merge as he attempts to stoke the fire of his creativity.
First broadcast on radio in 1959, Embers takes us on a journey into the haphazard world of Henry's imagination, a world of ever-shifting mental leaps, ruminations and ambiguities where creative storytelling and unfinished memories both real and unreal coalesce into one. Was Henry's father washed out to sea whilst taking his evening swim, or did he commit suicide?
