November 2012

The Annual Volunteer Fair on Campus took place in the Graduate Memorial Buildint (GMB) on Thursday 22nd of November. Summer opportunities abroad were showcased by EIL Intercultural Learning, Outreach Moldova and Habitat for Humanity among others. Local organisations seeking to recruit volunteers included Victim Support at Court, Green Sod Ireland, Camara (wiping corporate computers for redistribution to schools in need) and the Le Chéile mentoring programme for young people involved with the probation service. Dean of Students' Roll of Honour 2012

Over 450 Trinity College students were commended at the Dean of Students’ Roll of Honour ceremony in Trinity College on April 18th for their participation in extracurricular, voluntary activity both inside and outside the College.  The Roll of Honour aims to recognise the learning outside the classroom which students gain through extra-curricular voluntary activity.

Environment Society celebrate Green Week with local school

The Trinity Environment Society have teamed up with Larkin Community College (just off O’Connell St.) and the Central Model Senior School to help them get the “Green Flag” through co-operation, smart waste management and gardening, while also exploring responsible attitudes towards sustainable living and volunteer work.

Students in Free Enterprise comes to Ireland

SIFE Ireland joins the 38 country operations that comprise SIFE. This unique network works with leaders in business and higher education to mobilize university students to make a difference in their communities while developing the skills to become socially responsible business leaders. Plans are under way to establish SIFE teams at Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin, Dublin City University and National University of Ireland, Galway. National Day of Volunteering 2011

The Annual National Day of Volunteering (NDV) is on Friday, September 30th and once again Trinity is playing its part.  The event aims to encourage people to donate their time and skills for a few hours and concentrates on hands on involvement in the community. Keeping Iran's Heart Beating

Keeping Iran's heart beating - stories of women's rights activists is an exhibition which celebrates Iranian women's rights defenders. This exhibition showcases a number of Iranian women who are at the very heart of the human rights movement, and are some of the most courageous and effective human rights campaigners in Iran. Keeping Iran's Heart Beating was initiated by Trinity student Sheelan Yousefizadeh in partnership with Amnesty International Ireland with the support of TCD Community Initiative Funding. You are invited to attend the official launched by Nobel Laureate Dr. Shirin Ebadi at 1:30 on Saturday 17th of September in the UCD Astra Hall.

Shakespeare for the Community

This year’s festival includes a thorough programme of Civic Engagement. The focus is on increasing accessibility to Shakespearean Performance. The Festival has commissioned two productions from Trinity Students which will tour primary schools in the local Dublin area, giving children an opportunity to experience Shakespeare often for the first time.

Dean of Students' Roll of Honour 2011

On April 7th, three hundred and eighty five students who engage in extra-curricular voluntary activity were recognised at the inaugural Dean of Students' Roll of Honour cermony in the Dining Hall. The ceremony was addressed by Dr Martin McAleese B.Dent.Sc., M.A. (1984). Dr. McAleese spoke of the importance of moving outside the comfort zone to make things happen, change things and as an opportunity to change ourselves. He talked about how instrumental volunteers are in a variety of areas- sports, advocacy, service provision, social and community and in politics and peace.

SpunOut.ie Super Hero Grants Scheme

The ‘SpunOut.ie Super Hero Grants' scheme, supported by The Atlantic Philanthropies, is designed to encourage young people to develop innovative and imaginative projects that tackle Ireland's many economic, social, health, political and environmental problems. All young people aged between 15 and 25 who want to develop a new or existing project are invited to apply online for a Super Hero grant via the SpunOut.ie website.  Successful applicants will be awarded a bursary of €250 to help turn their ideas into action and will be linked in to a national network of progressive young change makers. Homeless Service Outreach Feb 22nd

You are invited to join the TCD outreach team on Tuesday 22nd February to help out in Lighthouse homeless ministry on Pearse Street. If you have a few hours to spare in the afternoon (2.30 to 5.00), your help would be very much appreciated to sort clothes for the clothes bank, make some sandwiches for the evening drop in service and do some tidying. We Volunteer! Exhibition of Student Volunteering

Building a Voice for Student Volunteering in Ireland On November 12th and 13th, more than 50 student volunteers from 16 Universities and Institutes of Technology across the island of Ireland came together to share knowledge, ideas and effective practice, to reflect on the impact, value and significance of their volunteering and to develop a mission statement for student volunteering in Ireland.

We Volunteer! will serve to highlight and promote student volunteering throughout 2011. National Awards to Volunteers in Irish Sport

This is the third year of the National Awards to Volunteers in Irish Sport , which is an initiative by the Department of Tourism, Culture and Sport in conjunction with the Federation of Irish Sports, which represents some 68 sports in Ireland. Members of the public are invited to nominate an individual whose contribution to their club has made a real difference and to give a short citation on the person nominated. From all the nominations received from the public ten winners will be selected to receive an award. The deadline for nominations is Tuesday, 30th November. NIID wins an Award funded by Dublin's unclaimed Bus Tickets

The Dublin Bus Community Support Programme was launched in December 2003 as a way of recognising the valuable work done by local charities and voluntary groups based across the Dublin Bus service network.  Ex-international footballer and Sunderland Chairman, Niall Quinn has been patron of the initiative since 2003. Under the programme, Dublin Bus awards grants to these groups in the amounts of €5,000, €2,000, and €1,000.  The grants are funded from long-term unclaimed change receipts.  This is the 7th year of the programme and to date, over 1000 groups have received funding from Dublin Bus with many worthwhile causes in communities across Dublin being helped.

This year the National Institute for Intellectual Disability were the proud recipients of an award for their Certificate in Contemporary Living Programme.
