RAG Week Outreach Project: The Factory
February 5 2010
On Friday 5th of February, more than twenty Trinity students volunteered to clear, clean and paint as part of a rejuvenation of 'The Factory' performance and film production space in Ringsend. Once finished, the original home of 'The Commitments' will provide Irish musicians and film makers with rehearsal rooms, high tech light sound and editing facilities, casting and screening rooms, indoor movie studios. It will also serve the community through education, training and employment schemes.
On the day, students had the opportunity to meet John Carney (Writer and Director of 'Once' 2006), Kirsten Sheridan (Co Writer of 'In America' 2002) and Lance Daly (Writer and Director of 'Kisses' 2008). All were delighted at Trinity's willingness to get involved and support this non-profit initiative and welcomed students to return in the future to get involved. A number of those who participated, currently study related disciplines (Interactive Digital Media, Music and Media Technology) and were keen to gain insight into the Irish film industry.
When reflecting on the day, volunteersfelt they had made a useful contribution and that both their sense of motivation and willingness to try new thing increased. All volunteers believed that their contribution was valued and said their outreach activity would motivate them to do more volunteering. One in two volunteers even felt that their mental health and well-being had also increased.
Volunteers said that they would recommend the experience to others and gave a variety of different reasons, including the fun factor, social element, confidence boost, insight into the industry/project and the worthwhile nature of the activity.
