Trinity Students Win Irish Times Debate

Mar 01, 2013

TCD Historical Society student, Kate Brady, was named overall winner in the individual category at the annual Irish Times debating championship, and was awarded with the Christina Murphy Memorial Trophy. Opposing the motion that ‘This House would Emigrate’, Kate was the only woman among the competition’s 12 team and individual debaters in the finals.

The TCD Bram Stoker Club won the Demosthenes Trophy. Debaters Liam Brophy and John Engle opposed the motion arguing that the inhibiting ‘stranglehold’ of emigration must be broken.

Now in its 54th year, the Irish Times debating championship was established to promote excellence in oratory and debating and is open to students in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.  The debate, held in Queen’s University Belfast, was chaired by Mr Justice Frank Clarke of the Supreme Court and the presiding adjudicator was Mr Justice Donnell Deeny.
