To celebrate science week the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) and Trinity College Dublin brought together 300 ambitious young scientists to meet high-achieving Irish chemists in the new Trinity Biomedical Sciences Institute.

Three hundred students from more than ten schools across Dublin attended the oversubscribed event which was supported by local high-tech employers such as Merck, Pfizer and Intel.  Students  learnt what it is like to work in a variety of chemistry-based jobs such as the national forensic science laboratory, a multinational pharmaceutical company or even as a publisher of scientific journals.

Some TCD Chemistry undergraduates were on hand to talk about another big question that many Leaving Certificate students have: “What is it like to study at college?” Postgraduate students from the School of Chemistry also provided a short demonstration talk showing how their cutting-edge research is relevant to every-day problems.

Dr Angela McKeown, RSC Regional Coordinator for Ireland, said: “The event is aimed at helping students that will shortly be making choices about what to study in college, to see what a career in the Chemical Sciences can do for them and we are delighted to work with Trinity College Dublin’s School of Chemistry on this.”

Dr Rachel Evans of the School of Chemistry in TCD said: “Our School is committed to enthusing the next generation and showing them the benefits of Chemistry as a degree subject for a bright future in our local industries.”
