Trinity College Dublin Careers Week offers students the opportunity to learn about a variety of careers, meet employers and find out about postgraduate study options. Featuring a number of employers, graduates and professional bodies representing a wide range of sectors, this week-long event, running from October 1st – 5th next, is organised by the TCD Careers Advisory Service, supported by the Student’s Union and the Graduate Students’ Union and sponsored by Deloitte,

This year, to reflect the challenges facing the economy, Careers Week is covering a wide diversity of career opportunities in Ireland and abroad. The emphasis on using creative strategies to find work is apparent with a session on leveraging social media by HR personnel from larger employers as well as opportunities in the EU and starting your own business. A broad spectrum of organisations will be present throughout the week, including Concern, Department of Taoiseach, the European Commission, Facebook, Google, ICON, the Irish Museums Association, Thejournal.ie, Newstalk, Paddy Power, Pfizer and many more.

The key themes this year are Industry Insights, Employer Skills and Postgraduate Study. Industry Insights covers areas such as entrepreneurship, journalism, NGO & development, marketing, translation, IT and pharmaceutical and bio-industry related areas. The Employer Skills Day includes a series of workshops, including CVs and online profiles, Interview skills, and assessment centres.  Students interested in postgraduate study in Ireland and abroad will also be catered for during the Postgraduate Study Day.

“This week of intensive careers activities is a natural introduction to a very busy semester in terms of graduate recruitment,” states Director of the TCD Careers Advisory Service, Sean Gannon. “It is followed by the Gradireland Graduate Careers Fair in the RDS on October 10th where the organisers are already talking in terms of the availability of 1000+ graduate jobs.  As the semester progresses other companies will be visiting Dublin and Trinity’s campus to present their opportunities.  At a time when there is a lot of negative feeling about the job market, this is very encouraging news.”

Other forthcoming careers events which students should watch out for include the TCD Law Fair taking place on October 9th, when representative of high profile Irish law firms will visit the campus to meet with students and CV Clinics taking place on October 8th and 9th. The Gradireland Graduate Careers Fair takes place on Wednesday, October 10th in the RDS featuring over 120 graduate recruiters, course providers and professional bodies from Ireland and the UK.

A full programme of TCD Careers Week activities is available on the Careers Advisory Service website at www.tcd.ie/careers/events.
