Trinity’s Computer Science Graduates in High Demand

The Computing Careers Event held recently in the O’Reilly Institute saw 26 companies from the Information, Communications and Technology (ICT) sector turn out to hire graduates from Trinity’s School of Computer Science and Statistics.  The interest in the event reflects the buoyancy of the ICT sector where the demand for computer science graduates continues to grow.

The event was organised by the School of Computer Science and Statistics in collaboration with the College Careers Advisory Service.  Director of Trinity’s Careers Advisory Service, Sean Gannon, said: “In a recent survey conducted by the Careers Service, employers in the IT sector placed a high value on Trinity graduates for their problem solving skills, creativity and flair as well as for their customer/client focus and orientation.”

According to a recent report released by the Irish Business and Employers Confederation (IBEC), there are approximately 3,500 vacancies in the technology sector in Ireland.  By 2015 it is forecast that the shortage of qualified technology staff in the EU will rise to between 384,000 and 700,000.  Although some sectors in the economy have seen significant reduction of jobs, information technology, including telecoms, continues to grow.

Commenting on the success of the event, the Head of the School of Computer Science and Statistics, Dr Jeremy Jones, said: “I am delighted to see such enthusiastic interaction and buzz between our students and key employers.  The future looks bright with so many exciting opportunities available for our graduates.”

Companies recruiting on the day included Accenture, Cisco, Deloitte, Google, IBM, and Oracle to name but a few.
