Chilean Ambassador Launches Books by Trinity Mathematician, Michael Purser

News feed for Trinity College Dublin.

Chilean Ambassador to Ireland, Leonel Searle, recently launched two books authored by Honorary Lecturer at Trinity’s School of Mathematics, Dr Michael Purser.

Speaking at the launch Vice Provost, Professor Linda Hogan paid tribute to Dr Purser not just as an author, but also as a researcher, lecturer and businessman. She spoke about his long standing commitment to Trinity and his contribution on many different levels.  In particular, she noted that as the founder of Baltimore Technologies, he had been a major employer to many Trinity graduates.

The books, entitled Beyond Buenos Aires and La Rosa con El Clavel, include fourteen stories of Peru and Chile that arose from the author's experience of the two countries dating back to his first visit to South America in 1965.  The stories are based on true events, either experienced by the author or told to him by local people.

All proceeds from the sale of the books will go to the Trinity Access Programmes (TAP) which aim to widen access and participation at third level of under-represented groups. Head of TAP, Cliona Hannon, thanked Dr Purser and said: “This support will be invaluable in helping these talented students to overcome the barriers they face to achieve their full potential.”

Both books are on sale in Trinity College's Library Shop.

About the author:

Dr Michael Purser is an Honorary Lecturer at Trinity’s School of Mathematics and founder of Baltimore Technologies.    Since 1965 Dr Purser has lived, worked and travelled in southern South America, acting among other things, as a consultant in the application of computerised control to industrial processes such as power electricity and mining.  He has lectured in numerous South American universities.
