TCD Hosts an Exhibition on Student Volunteering – We Volunteer!

News feed for Trinity College Dublin.

Jan 06, 2011

To celebrate and recognise the spirit of volunteering and the contribution which student volunteers make to society, their colleagues and peers, an exhibition on student volunteering called We Volunteer! will preview in Trinity College Dublin from January 17- 23 next in the Orientation Space of the Berkeley Lecky Ussher Library Complex.

The exhibition has been developed by universities and institutes of technology from across Ireland and coincides with the European Year of Volunteering 2011.  It will be officially launched in the National Library of Ireland on January 24th.

Over half of Trinity College Dublin students volunteer on a regular basis helping with clubs, societies, publications and community organisations.  It is estimated this student group contributes an average of 11 hours per week during term time to various groups and causes highlighting the flourishing volunteering spirit within today’s student population.  This trend is mirrored in other higher education institutions across Ireland.

The We Volunteer! exhibition aims to highlight the extent and diversity of student volunteering in Ireland.  It is hoped the exhibition will not only recognise current student volunteers and their efforts to add value to their local communities but also to inspire others to donate some of their time and skills during the European Year of Volunteering.  The exhibition will showcase the work of 20 volunteers from higher education institutions across Ireland who have worked with diverse organisations such as the Christina Noble Foundation in Vietnam, the Galway Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, community enterprise projects in Belfast and carpentry training in rural Zambia to name but a few.

Students are encouraged to come along and explore the range of possibilities volunteering can offer.  For more information on volunteering and upcoming opportunities contact the Civic Engagement Officer, Róisín McGrogan by email at mcgrogar@tcd.ie.
