Trinity postgraduate student Kevin Moerman of the Trinity Centre for Bioengineering was awarded the 2010 Engineers Ireland Biomedical Research Medal recently for his significant contribution to the field of biomedical engineering research.  The judging panel, made up of both Irish and international experts in the field, chose Kevin from a shortlist of five finalists after each candidate presented their research to delegates at the annual Bioengineering in Ireland conference in Dublin.

Kevin’s research paper entitled Non-invasive determination of the mechanical properties of living human soft tissue offers a better understanding of human muscle behaviour in compression, important for preventing pressure sores from prolonged periods of immobility.  At the ceremony Kevin was presented with a commemorative Engineers Ireland medal and a cheque for €1000, sponsored by Georgia Tech Ireland.

Dr Kevin O’Kelly, Deputy Director for the Trinity Centre for Bioengineering chaired this year’s conference and the keynote address was delivered by Professor Rose Anne Kenny, head of Medical Gerontology at TCD and Director and lead investigator for the first Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA).  Professor Kenny’s address reinforced the theme of the conference which promoted bioengineering for better health.
