Research income has reduced over the past twelve months by approximately €2 million (3%) to €65.2 million from 2010/11 levels. The value of new awards entered into in the year amounted to €67.1 million. While representing a decrease of c. 40% on the prior year value (c. €109m), when one allows for one-off awards in 2010/11, the real or actual decrease is closer to 8%.

There were 1,589 active research accounts and research activity supported 1,325 individuals in 2011/12.

Trinity spearheads several major national longitudinal studies, including children's research and ageing, and activities in nanoscience and telecommunications research supported by Science Foundation Ireland centres of excellence on campus. Trinity’s major research institutes and centres in areas such as neuroscience, globalisation, immunology, molecular medicine and the Trinity Long Room Hub for the arts and humanities are firmly established among the international leaders in their fields. Trinity is actively involved in significant national collaborative research ventures such as the National Digital Research Centre (NDRC), Molecular Medicine Ireland (MMI) and the National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training (NIBRT).

In addition to Trinity College’s ongoing interdisciplinary research initiatives in these areas, the following new projects were among those launched during 2011/12:
