Several distinguished prizes are offered annually in the Department of Classics. Some of these are awareded on the results of the annual examinations; for others special examinations and/or assignments are required, and candidates must give notice to the Department or to the Senior Lecturer in advance. We urge students to enter for them: keen competition means that the awards carry considerable kudos (and in many cases substantial sums of money).
Students in the Department of Classics are encouraged to travel in Mediterranean lands or elsewhere in the Greek and Roman world, to to participate in study tour and summer schools (e.g.organised by the Irish Institute of Hellenic Studies at Athens; British School at Athens; British School at Rome). Students who wish to gain experience in archaeological fieldwork are given guidance and assistance towards finding places on digs in the summer vacation. The Department has two funds to support these activities, the Stanford Travelling Scholarship and the Basil Wilson Fund, to which students in the Department of Classics, are encouraged to apply. An application form is available from the Departmental Office. The closing date for all applications is Friday May 9th 2011.
Full details of all prizes and travel awards are provided in the Student Undergraduate Handbook (PDF, 397kb)
