The Irish Institute of Hellenic Studies in Athens (IIHSA) was founded in 1996 to facilitate Irish-based students and scholars who carry out research and archaeological fieldwork in Greece. It is run from Ireland by a Managing Committee with representatives from the participating Universities (currently Trinity College Dublin; University College Dublin; NUI Galway; NUI Maynooth; University College Cork; Queen’s University Belfast), and a Director (currently Professor Joanne Murphy). The premises in Athens are under the day to day management of the Assistant Director.

Among its activities, the IIHSA co-ordinates Irish archaeological fieldwork in Greece, and organises yearly study tours of Greece for students of Irish Universities. It also offers annual student bursaries and a postgraduate internship in Athens, andorganises lectures, research seminars and workshops in Athens and in Ireland.
