CL7027 Elementary Greek

Assessment: 20% Continuous assessment and 80% two 3-hr end-of-year examinations in Trinity Term. Resits, if needed, will take place in September

Overview and Aims

An introduction to the Greek language using the textbook Reading Greek. The aims of the module are:

  • To offer a comprehensive instruction in the Greek language.
  • To bring students to a good reading knowledge of Greek prose and poetry.
  • To develop language study skills.
  • To complement the study of Classical topics and methodologies.
  • To facilitate progression to research at PhD level on literary or historical subjects.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

  • Translate unseen, unadapted passages from Attic or Koine Greek texts of limited difficulty into idiomatic English with some vocabulary aid but without access to a dictionary
  • Identify and analyse basic aspects of morphology (noun and verb systems), syntax (noun phrases, simple and complex sentences) and pragmatics (word order, text structure)
  • Translate a simple English passage into comprehensible Attic Greek
