Management of coastal ecosystems requires structured knowledge of the habitats and plant and animal communities i.e. BIOTOPES present on the sea bed.
In addition this information aids the:

- Determination of areas sensitive to disturbance and pollution
- Preparation of environmental impact assessments
- Monitoring of environmental change
