Advice For Your Year - Junior Fresh

Make the most of Trinity Life

Trinity is on a campus of only 41 acres. Everything is generally within 15 minutes of you.

Trinity Life includes; Clubs & Societies, Sports, Library and Academic departments

Aim to get a good result at the end of first year. Employers will want to know how well you did throughout your whole time in College.

Learn a language while in College, as an optional course and complete and develop your Europass Language Passport (part of the European Language Portfolio). The Europass Language Passport allows you to describe and detail your language skills and competences. It is a self-assessment document where you can detail your language proficiency regardless of whether that proficiency was attained formally or informally. Complete your own Europass Language Passport and view sample Passports.

Learn computer skills.

Do some voluntary or part-time work, but not too much that it interferes with your studies.

Talk to Student Union reps and officers. They are there to help you. Write for student newspapers if you are thinking of a future in journalism or publishing.

The secret of success is to use all the facilities and contacts.

Thinking of changing your Course?

If you think that you have chosen the wrong course for any reason see your tutor. You may change to a new course within the first few weeks if:

  • You have the points
  • You have the necessary subject and level of achievement requirements
  • AND if there is a vacant place.

The Careers Advisory Service may be able to help you identify your options. Make an appointment to meet with your Careers Adviser. At this stage, we suggest that you evaluate your interests by completing one of the guidance software packages at Plan Your Career - generally PathfinderLive, CareersPortal Interest Profiler or Qualifax are recommended as starting points, for Junior Freshmen.

If you are thinking of leaving TCD and going elsewhere you may need to go back to your school guidance counsellor.

If you leave your course before the end of January you may save half of next years fees, if you return to full-time further education next year.

I just wanted to let you know that I was really pleased with how the interview went today. A lot of the questions you asked me on Wednesday came up so I felt well prepared.
