One-Year-Grant for Postgraduate Students

This competitive scholarship (tenable from October 2014 to 31 July 2015) provides funds for graduating or graduate students for postgraduate study and/or research at any German university, Fachhochschule, research institute, music academy or art college for one academic year.  The stay at a German institution of  higher education may serve the following purpose:

  • Study for a postgraduate degree to be taken in Germany (eg Master, Magister or Diplom)

Applications:  Applications are open to students with excellent academic results.  Students in the arts, humanities and social sciences should normally have a good command of German.  The application must be accompanied by an extract from the host university's website with details (title of study programme, study plan and the expected length of studies, language of instruction, admission requirements plus informaiton of any tuition fees) for th chosen degree programme.  Please note that all study must be at postgraduate level.

Application deadlines:

  • 1 November 2013 (IRL/UK) for Architecture, Choreography, Dance, Theatre, Jazz, Music and Art;
  • 15 January 2014 (IRL/UK) for other academic subjects

Value: EUR750 per month plus initial extra payment and a lump sum towards travel.

The 2014-2015 Irish Fulbright Awards are Now Open for Applications
 
The Fulbright Commission of Ireland  opened its application period for the 2014-2015 Fulbright Awards, which are grants for Irish or EU citizens to study, research, or teach in the U.S. The awards include a monetary grant, plus accident and emergency insurance, cultural and professional programming, and visa administration. Applications are due by Wednesday, November 13th, 2013 and more information can be found on the newly redesigned website, www.fulbright.ie.

New this year are the InFACT Awards (Innovative Fulbright Awards in Communications Technology). These awards are aimed at students and scholars who are exploring the transformative power of communications technology in the new digital landscape. All disciplines are welcome to apply but applicants in the areas of Education, Digital Arts and Culture, and Diaspora Studies are particularly encouraged.

In addition, there are a number of general awards; potential applicants must apply in one of the following categories:

Fulbright Irish Student Award: Grants for Irish citizens or E.U. citizens resident in Ireland for three or more years to complete postgraduate research or study over the course of one year in the United States. Students are eligible for a number of sponsored awards, including CRH, Enterprise Ireland, Environmental Protection Agency, University of Notre Dame, and Teagasc.


Fulbright Irish Scholar Award: Grants for Irish citizens or E.U. citizens resident in Ireland for three or more years to complete postdoctoral or professional research or lecturing over the course of one year in the United States. Recent PhD graduates (postdoctoral studies) are eligible for sponsored awards from Enterprise Ireland, Environmental Protection Agency, and Teagasc.
 

Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistantship (FLTA): Grants for Irish citizens or E.U. citizens resident in Ireland for three or more years to teach Irish and take courses at a U.S. college over the course of ten months in the United States.
 

Applications are encouraged in all disciplines, including the arts.

Title:
Swiss Government Scholarships 2014-2015

The Swiss Government is now seeking applications from gifted and interested young scientists and researchers from Ireland, through the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS), for a number of different types of postgraduate university scholarships (Swiss Universities, Federal Institutes of Technology as well as Universities of Applied Sciences). The different types of scholarships offered are Research Scholarships, Post-doctoral Scholarships and Fine Arts Scholarships. 
 
Under the new regulations, candidates can only apply for research fellowships and post-doctoral scholarships. It is not possible to apply for a Masters Scholarship except for study in Music Academies and Fine Arts.
 
Fine Arts Scholarships are being offered to highly qualified young artists from all artistic branches to enable the undertaking of master studies or research in the Conservatories or Arts Schools affiliated to the Universities of Applied Sciences.
 
All the necessary information on the different types of scholarships being offered, together with the eligibility criteria and the application procedure, can be found on the website http://www.sbf.admin.ch – select English version, select ‘ Topics’ then ‘General Education’ and then ‘Scholarships and grants’.

Applicants for a Swiss Government Scholarship must already be in command of the necessary language skills required for their studies.
 
Irish graduates who wish to apply must complete the application forms electronically. The forms must be printed off and signed by the applicant.
 
The completed application forms (and relevant enclosures) should then be returned, in triplicate, to the Department of Education and Skills, International Section, Marlborough Street, Dublin 1, not later than 5.30 pm on Wednesday, 13 November 2013. Late applications will not be considered.

Japan Foundation Programmes 2014-2015

The Japan Foundation was founded in 1972, it is an independent body under the aegis of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.  The Foundation operates a number of programmes, often in partnership with other organisations, focusing mainly on three areas: Arts and Cultural Exchange, Japanese – Language Education Overseas, and Japanese Studies and Intellectual Exchange.

The application deadline for most programmes is Monday, 2 December 2013.  However, application destinations and deadlines vary among programmes, you are advised to read the relevant information on page 4 of the Programme Guidelines – this booklet can be downloaded as a .pdf on the above mentioned website. Early submission of the application documents is extremely important.

DAAD - University Summer Language Course Grants for Advanced Students

Every year German universities offer a broad range of three-to-four week summer language courses which, in addition to intensive language teaching, focus on literary, cultural, political and economic aspects of modern Germany.  An extensive extra-curricular programme complements the core material.

Applications:  Undergraduate students in all disciplines, enrolled full time, are eligible to apply.  A good knowledge of German at the time of application is essential.  The initial selection process for the awards is administered by the German Departments of UK & Irish universities in the autumn of the preceding year, who then submit the applications to the London office of the DAAD on behalf of their students; individual enquiries may be made to the London office.

One-Year-Grant for Undergraduate Degree Course Students of German at Irish Universities

The scheme is intended for 2nd-year students of German or European Studies at Irish universities who wish to spend their third year in Germany and who can submit a well-defined project for the year abroad.

Applications:  All applications are administered by a process of nomination through the German Department of the student's home university. Details of the scheme are sent to the German Departments of all Irish universities who organise a pre-selection of candidates for submission to the German Embassy in Dublin. Students should hold Irish nationality or have been studying in Ireland for at least one year at the time of application.

Application deadline: 15 January 2014

Funding: €650 per month plus an initial extra payment and a lump sum towards travel expenses.

•  DAAD application form completed online (link & info below) and printed out, signed and returned with the remaining documents detailed below (1 copy)

•  Statement describing your study or project written in German (candidates may also supply an English summary of their project alongside this if they wish) (1 copy)


•  Two completed DAAD reference forms . These should be completed by supervisors/lecturers who teach the applicant's subject(s). They should be confidential (i.e. in a sealed envelope)


•  German language test certificate

•  Copies of correspondence with German universities in form of an email. The correspondence should  show that a tutor at the host university will be able to supervise your project

•  Photocopies of School Leaving Certificates and transcripts showing university examination marks to date.

•  Recent passport-sized photograph, attached to your form

Summary of scholarships and awards (2014/2015)


HARDWICKE ENTRANCE AWARDS £30,000
100 per year. Apply at any time, preferably before admission.
Covers Admission and Call fees and dining charges.
Apply at any time.  These are considered twice a year.  Closing dates - 30 November & 30 April.  Results issued the following month.  Follow the same procedure for references as for the other awards.

CPE SCHOLARSHIPS for non-law graduates of outstanding ability £150,000
Up to 32 Scholarships of up to £7,000.
Closing date - 2nd May 2014 in your 3rd year at university or year prior to commencing the CPE course.

MAJOR AWARDS FOR BAR PROFESSIONAL TRAINING COURSE YEAR £1,237,500
Up to 70 Scholarships of between £6,000 and £18,000 each
Up to 40 Bursaries of up to £3,000 each.
Closing date 1st November 2013 in your 3rd year at university or the year prior to commencing the BPTC year.

Tancred Studentships
The Scholarships for the BPTC year will include two awards up to £15,000. The money is given by the Tancred Charities.

Scholarships for the BPTC year will include the offer to appropriate candidates of Accommodation Awards 14 rooms in self-contained flats in the Inn.

These will form part of a BPTC Scholarship, the amount of the award being reduced to take account of the accommodation.  Application forms for accommodation will be sent out with invitations to attend interviews.

AWARDS FOR PUPILLAGE YEAR £25,000
Up to 50 Scholarships of up to £1,500.
apply during your BPTC year or year prior to commencing pupillage.  The closing date is 31st July.

J P WARNER AWARD £3,500
For young barristers to spend three months at the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg.

INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT, THE HAGUE AWARD £3,500
For young barristers to spend three months at the International Criminal, The Hague.

PETER DUFFY HUMAN RIGHTS AWARD £3,500
For young barristers to spend three months at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.

CONTINUING EDUCATION FUND £26,500
A bursary fund for overseas placements.

SUNDRY PRIZES FOR EXAM PAPERS AND DEBATING COMPETITIONS £2,000
Several prizes are given for performance in the BPTC; the Sir Louis Gluckstein Prize for debating or advocacy, the Ede and Ravenscroft Award for the Student of the Year; the Crowther Shield for extempore advocacy.

TOTAL: £1,481,500
