Registration for all the events below will open two-three weeks prior to each event on this web page. You will receive a confirmation email within three days, and a further reminder email closer to the date of the event. There is a 24 hour cancellation policy for all of our events. All postgraduate students can register for the workshops below at no charge.

Small Group Teaching

You will learn how to write effective learning outcomes; how to plan a teaching session, how to accommodate student diversity, and how to deal with challenging situations. |

Preparing to Lecture
Facilitator: Dr. Anne Markey In this session you will be learning how to structure and deliver a lecture effectively. This will include looking at the purpose of the lecture format, how to structure a lecture on the basis of relevant learning outcomes, how to engage students and deal with problems, and how to manage your own nerves and start to develop a presentation style. |

Preparing an Article for Publication (Humanities)
Facilitator: Dr. Anne Markey This interactive workshop explores how to prepare a research article from a dissertation or thesis chapter. It presents journal editors’ perspectives on common reasons for rejecting articles and uses these to establish the main areas to address when writing or re-writing for publication. The workshop will also present for discussion some approaches and strategies to improve writing confidence. |

Turning a Thesis into a Book (Humanities)
Facilitator: Dr. Anne Markey This interactive workshop explores issues involved in the process of turning a postgraduate thesis into a monograph. Topics covered include choosing a publisher; preparing a proposal; responding to readers' reports; revising and making changes. The workshop will also provide opportunities for discussion of other issues such as distribution, peer review, and publishing subventions. |
Teaching and Supporting Learning Module

Two-part development programme for postgraduate teaching assistants. There is no charge for attending these events.
Part I: Introduction to Teaching and Supporting Learning is one day foundation course designed for postgraduates new to teaching or considering taking on a teaching role. It runs frequently at the beginning of the academic year. Some Schools expect all their teaching assistants to attend this course if they are going to be tutoring, demonstrating or running tutorials for the first time.
Part II: Teaching and Supporting Learning is a short, structured credit-bearing module aimed at postgraduate teaching assistants that want to further develop their teaching practice and understanding of student learning. Sessions are held throughout the term and participants are expected to create a portfolio of evidence of their teaching practices. You must be teaching at least two hours per week or 12 hours during the semester in which the module is undertaken.
The full module descriptor provides more detail about the module, including the ECTS credits available upon successful completion of this course. In addition, all attendees that attend the module and complete a portfolio receive a CAPSL certificate of completion.
