The Trinity Teaching Award for Postgraduate Students
The Trinity Teaching Award for Postgraduate Students will run on a pilot basis in 2012-13 in order to identify and recognize individual postgraduate students who make a substantial contribution to undergraduate student learning. Each School may nominate a maximum of 3 students for consideration by the panel. Shortlisted postgraduate students will be invited to attend an interview during which they will give a demonstration of their teaching.
The Graduate Students Union has provided funding to support this initiative and the scheme is being run as a collaboration between the Graduate Studies Office and CAPSL.
The nomination form which can be downloaded here (see below) should be completed by the School (Section A) and the nominee (Section B) and submitted by the School to capsl@tcd.ie by Friday 1st March 2013 with ‘PG Teaching Award’in the subject line.

The successful candidates will each receive a prize of €500 and a commemorative plaque.
NAIRTL Teaching Awards
Dublin Castle played host to the NAIRTL National Awards for Excellence in Teaching on Monday, September 17th 2012. Fifteen Higher Education staff representing six different Higher Education Institutions, including our own Dr Martin Fellenz, School of Business, Trinity College Dublin, received awards at this prestigious event in recognition of their outstanding contribution to teaching and research in Higher Education.

This is the fifth year of this event and featured the largest number of recipients to date. There are now more than forty NAIRTL Award winners in the Irish higher education system who act as ambassadors for excellence in teaching in their own institutions, nationally and internationally. The fifteen winners represent a broad range of disciplines including Business, Chemistry, Geography, Humanities, Paediatrics, and Physical Sciences, and were chosen from thirty-one detailed submissions from fourteen different Higher Education Institutions across Ireland.
The National Academy for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning (NAIRTL) was established in 2007 and is funded by the Strategic Innovation Fund of the Higher Education Authority. NAIRTL encourages, supports, and rewards efforts to ensure the best quality learning experience for undergraduate and postgraduate students. The NAIRTL Awards for Excellence in Teaching celebrates and rewards those who have demonstrated outstanding success at linking research and teaching. The Awardees each receive a €5,000 award which can be used to further enhance the teaching of their subject and to enable them to pursue their own professional development.
The 2012 Awards were presented by Seán Ó Foghlú, Secretary General of the Department of Education and Skills, who congratulated the Award winners saying “you have mastered both the art and the science of teaching to benefit students and for this we are here to thank you and to celebrate you”. The importance of the National Awards scheme was underlined by the Secretary General saying “there is no better way of ensuring that our society is creative and innovative than to lead by example and by providing innovative and creative teaching and learning opportunities in our Higher Education institutions. That is what these teaching awards strive to recognise and support”.
Speaking at the event, Professor Aine Hyland, Chair of the Awards Selection Committee, said
“In setting up this scheme five years ago, Ireland took its place among the countries of the world which truly value excellent teaching in higher education - and it is no coincidence that these are also the countries whose universities are at the top of the international higher education league tables… including the US, the UK, Canada, and Australia.”
The 2012 Award winners represent the outstanding standard of many teachers in Irish higher education and many of whom having already received a Teaching Award in their own institution. The engagement of so many of institutions with the National Awards initiative is greatly encouraging and highlights the commitment of the Higher Education sector to research-informed teaching and learning practices.
