Broad Curriculum Language Modules
Language modules provided by the Centre for Language and Communication Studies (CLCS) aim to increase student mobility, provide added value to undergraduate studies, and enhance students’ career prospects. These evening language courses are designed to help develop practical communication skills for study or work experience abroad. Please note that these are not grammar or conversation classes, but instead employ a project-based curriculum.
Language modules are available in the following languages and proficiency levels (depending upon sufficient enrolment):
- A1 level (absolute beginners): German, Turkish, Italian, French, Spanish, Irish, Korean
- A2 level (beginners, elementary): German, Turkish, Italian
- B1 level (non-beginners, intermediate - Leaving Certificate or equivalent required): German, French, Spanish, Irish
- B2 level (non-beginners, advanced - Leaving Certificate or equivalent required): German, French
All Broad Curriculum language modules must be taken over two terms, and are worth 5 credits. All language modules take place after 6pm (Mon-Thurs), in classrooms in the Arts Building.

A1 level |
German, Turkish, Italian, French, Spanish, Irish, Korean

…if you have never studied this language before (although you may know some very basic words and phrases). |
A2 level |
German, Turkish, Italian
|
…if you can already understand and say some basic phrases, if you can introduce yourself, ask and answer questions about personal details, if you can interact in a simple way when people speak slowly. |
B1 level |
German, French, Spanish, Irish
|
…if you can already describe who you are, where you come from, exchange information and communicate in routine tasks (shopping, directions, work). Pass in Leaving Certificate required. |
B2 level |
German, French |
…if you can already deal with most situations arising whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken. Pass in Leaving Certificate required + additional linguistic experience (e.g. work/travel) required. |
