Description:
This module aims to introduce students to basic data handling and analysis including using EXCEL spreadsheets, exploring data, plotting graphs and carrying out statistical analysis. In addition, we will address the fundamentals of experimental design. Practical feedback sessions each week will allow students to monitor progress and a computer-based examination at the end of the module will form half of the assessment for this course.
Learning outcomes:
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
- Apply the scientific method and formulate testable hypotheses
- Differentiate among broad types of data
- Construct and organize spreadsheets for data analysis
- Calculate basic summary statistics
- Produce high quality graphical data summaries
- Determine which statistical tests are appropriate in particular circumstances and conduct basic statistical procedures
