Within Botany, the focus is on the phylogeny and evolution of higher plants especially in European and Tropical Asian and Pacific regions, with strong links to population/conservation genetics of various plant species. The large and internationally important Herbarium is central to many of our activities, as is the molecular lab with DNA bank and the Trinity College Botanic Garden (Trevor Hodkinson, John Parnell, Steve Waldren). The Trinity College Botanic Garden houses living material of some of the collections and provides glasshouse and other growth facilities.
The group aims to investigate the phylogeny and evolution of higher plants especially in European and Tropical Asian and Pacific regions.
It also investigates the population/conservation genetics of various plant species.
The capacity of the research group has been greatly increased by the purchase of an ABI 3130xl 16-capillary electrophoresis sequencer/analyser that is housed in the Department’s molecular laboratory. This laboratory is also the location of the Department of Botany DNA Bank.
