Research Profile

Assessment of the potential contribution of energy crops to sustainable development in Ireland. This is based on the use of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to quantifying greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions possible from energy crops, considering land use changes, peat and coal electricity substitution with co-fired biomass, and oil and gas heat substitution with wood-chip heat. Also, this work involves analysing the financial costs and benefits of energy crop cultivation and combustion, from a farmer perspective, and from a household / power station management perspective. Further work will quantify the additional impacts of energy crops in terms of biodiversity, water quality and acidifying gas emissions, based on LCA, and attempt to cost these impacts using cost-benefit analyses.
