Satellite Meeting to the 15th European Bioenergetics Conference (EBEC)

"Quinone Binding and Catalysis"

Friday 18th July 2008, 09.30 - 18.00
Room LTEE 3, Panoz Buildings 4 & 5 (Map)
Trinity College Dublin, Ireland

Organised by Fraser MacMillan (UEA, Norwich, UK) and Carola Hunte (University of Leeds, UK)

A major challenge for the future understanding of the roots of human health is to Link the physics and the physiology of the mitochondrion. Ubiquinone is a key component of the mitochondrion that connects electron tunneling, proton translocation and energy conversion, and the molecular diffusion of reducing power. Of equal importance is its interaction with molecular oxygen and superoxide generation, whether it be adventitious and damaging or regulated.

The environment of an EBEC conference, which brings together many of Europe's and the world's top investigators and the best laboratories and scientists in the field of bioenergetics research in mitochondria, provides the perfect opportunity to bring these leading scientists closer together in a small forum to discuss their latest work on quinone.

The programme will focus on key parts of the respiratory chain that include all aspects of ubiquinone action e.g. mitochondrial complexes I and III.

Discussions will target the mechanistic role of quinone in these and many other enzymes spanning areas of limited (Complex I) and growing knowledge (complex III) that through the quinone molecule governs so much of the mitochondrial and cellular activities.

Anyone interested in participating should make contact with the organisers by email (fraser.macmillan@uea.ac.uk).
Numbers are limited to ~80 participants.
