Drug Dosage in use in BRU

Procedures

 

Background

The administration and purchase of drugs to animals is under the control of the veterinary surgeon attached to the BioResources unit. Particularly the POM (prescription only medicines) and the VSO (veterinary surgeons only) categories. This is controlled by the “Animal Remedies Act” regulations.

The drugs normally involved are:

  • Antibiotics Intraval Sodium
  • ACP Isoflurane
  • Buprinorphine Rompun
  • Euthathal Rymadal
  • Finadyne Stresnil
  • Hypnorm Sagatal
  • Halothane Vetalar
  • Hypnovel

These products must be dispensed to clients and must carry an appropriate label.
Nota Bene; supplies of these labels are kept in the drug cupboard.

Procedures

The following procedures should be adhered to

1. All of these products will be held in a separate locked cupboard which has restricted access

2. They will only be dispensed on order of the Veterinary Surgeon.

3. Only authorised persons are allowed to dispense drugs, they are responsible for the correct handling and storage of the product

4. Even drugs going into BioResources Unit Minor Procedures Rooms must be dispensed.

5. Only supplied when customer provides an order signed.

• Supplied only to an authorised holder of drugs
e.g. Doctor, Pharmacist, Veterinarian and Dentist.

6. The person must be given an instruction showing the correct storage of these drugs.

7. A copy of the guidance on handling is given if it is a first time user.

8. If the container is too small to hold the label they should be dispensed in a plastic envelope; with label attached.

9. Dispenser supplies an appropriate label indicating the dispensing number and issue date on the prescription, to be kept in the dispensing folder.

10. The record of use kept with the products should be maintained in a controlled hard backed book; with space recording each transaction

Analgesia

Tail Tipping of mice for Genetic typing (nov-03) ( amend Aug 04)
All weaned animals must be on 48 hours of Carprophen *(Rimadyl) in the drinking water for 24 hours
before and after tipping
Make up solution as follows
requirements are for 5mg.kg body weight
Weaned mouse  approx 10g will drink about 1 ml of water daily
Must consume at least 0.05mg of drug
Drug contains  50mg /ml ( only use large animal product aqueous solution comes in 50ml containers) 
Put 0.2 ml of drug in 200mls of water and make available ad lib 
 Peri Operative use of NSAID analgesia in Rats/ Mice 
Use Large animal *Rimadyl dilute with Water for Injection
need to give 5mg/kg  s/c   = 0.5mg/100g
conc. = 50mg/ml  dilute 1/10 with WFI and give 0.1 ml per 100g body weight
For mice you can dilute 1/20 and give 0.2 ml per 100g or  0.1 ml per 50 G  or 0.025 ml per 25 G  


Anaesthesia

Ketamine Xyzaline mixture from Anaesthesia in MICE
does rate ( from PA Flecknell  Laboratory Animal anaesthesia 2nd ed  p249)
100mg kg   Ketamine + 10 mg kg xyzaline   given I/P
mixture to be made up in a sterile container    
0.5 ml (50mg) Ketamine  ( Vetalar)  + 0.25 ml (5mg) xyzaline (Rompun)  + 4.25 Water for injection ( WFI)
Dose give 0.1ml per 10G body weight  give approx (17doses)


 Ketamine Xyzaline mixture from Anaesthesia in Rats
does rate ( from PA Flecknell  Laboratory Animal anaesthesia 2nd ed  p249)
75mg kg   Ketamine + 10 mg kg xyzaline   given I/P
mixture to be made up in a sterile container    
0.75 ml (70mg) Ketamine  ( Vetalar)  + 0.5 ml (15mg) xyzaline (Rompun)  + 0.75 Water for injection ( WFI)
Dose give 0.2ml per 100G body weight  give approx (4 doses)


 Ivomec form mites and mouse pInworms

Make up 2ml of Ivomec ( Cattel) in 200 mls of water and 200mls of propolyne glycol

spray the animals twice a week
