Ethical review regarding the use of animals in TCD (2004)
Ethical review form to be filled in by applicant
Ethical approval is required before an application for a licence will be forwarded to the Department of health.
The BioResources Committee has in place an ethical review process for the approval of projects involving animals.
The BioResources Committee is ultimately responsible to the College Board for the ethical use of animals in college. It has in place an ethical sub group which over-sees the conditions under which animals are used and the projects which are licensed.

In order for the reviewers to be prepared for the meeting
it is necessary that the submission are received two weeks before the meeting date.

Process:
The Ethics Committee will issue a letter of compliance once the following conditions have been fulfilled.
Any work involving the use of living animals requires that the worker has a valid licence issued by the Department of Health.
The application form for a licence is processed thought the Director of the Unit.
She/He will make an initial assessment regarding the acceptability of the project with regard to animal welfare.
She/He is the person responsible for signing the “Animal Welfare” statement on the form. This will not be signed until ethical approval has been give.
The Ethical approval form will be passed to the ethical review committee by email where they will give their opinion by email. The Chair will determine the consensus.
A full committee meeting may be called if there are issues which need to be discussed, additional information may be requested from applicant.
Severity Banding
A project which has a severity banding; is severe or death; is used as an end point, will be given special consideration by the committee.
