Dear New user
Welcome to the BioResources Unit

When you apply to use the unit you will be supplied with a pack of documents. Please read them carefully and return those which need to be signed.

The unit serves as an interfaculty service unit to facilitate research, which involves the use of animals.
The Unit is a registered premise under the national regulations relating to the use of animals for scientific purposes (SI/566/02).

The purpose of the unit is two fold

  1. To help you achieve the best possible results form your scientific work involving animals
  2. To ensure animal use in college is of the highest ethical and scientific standard.

The unit is managed by the Director Peter Nowlan who with the staff has overall responsibility to the Board, through the BioResources Management Committee, to ensure that animal are used in accordance with National Legislation and in accordance with the college policy on the use of animals for scientific purposes. Each of the staff is trained to score pain and distress and are obligated to act to ensure the well being of the animals under their care.

Services of the unit
The unit is mandated to provide a support service to all students or staff who use animals in research.

Applying to use the unit ( Personal Code Application Form  
The Unit is available to all bona fide staff and students who require its services.
Before commencing work it is necessary to register with the unit and to open an account. You will have to fill in a form which requires you to have a valid student or staff card and to know the billing arrangements which are applicable to your project. This account will be identified by a unique personal code which will be given to you.

Safety Statement
Include with the application form is a statement that you have read and indicate that you are prepared to adhere to the safety regulations relating to the unit. This statement is not intended to be a complete one. It relates to the additional dangers that you may encounter in an animal unit. It should be read in conjunction with your Department safety statement and is additional to that statement.
Specific attention should be paid to the policy on exposure to laboratory animal allergens

Requisition form(guidance )     real form   form for medicines
The Unit is required to fund its entire non-pay budget. Therefore all items must be charged. It is necessary to fill out a requisition form, which will include the charging details, the precise item and date of supply.

For the supply of medicines which are regulated by Animal Remedies regulation a veterinary prescription must be given apply on a special form

Because we supply living animal it will be necessary to discuss your requirements with the appropriate technician before filling in this form. In the first instance you must discuss your project with the Director.

If you intend to use living animals you will need to apply for a licence. The Department of Health issues this licence.

In Ireland it is not permissible to perform any procedure on an animal for scientific purposes unless a licence specifically for the intended purpose has been issued. The unit will help you process this licence. Blank forms are provided. These need only be filled in draft format.  Please download a copy and email it to us. The unit will type up the completed form ready for your approval. Guidelines to enable you to fill out the form are provided with the welcome pack.

Training Course.
It is a requirement of the licence conditions that all licence holders must under go a period of training.

The unit hold training courses twice a year, usually in October and March, Attendance at this course is obligatory. Non attendance will result in withdrawal of the facilities. The dates are always well flagged and the next date will be available on the Units web page http://www.tcd.ie/BioResources/

The course is  two full days and includes an assessment. They are normally held outside of term.

It is not necessary to have taken the course to commence work However before doing so we will ask to take a short training time with the technical staff to familiarise yourself with the local conditions such as handling animals and filling out the requisition forms.   This is done on a one to one basis. Please apply to the secretary to make an appointment.

There is a list of rules which you are expected to comply with. They are all basic common sense and their purpose is to enable us to help you.
